In partnership with Gabrielle’s Wings, the YMCA of the Greater Seattle Area will pilot a water safety program specifically focused on Black children in vulnerable communities. In year one the program will engage 100 youth and their families to participate in water education and family engagement activities.  Youth who participate in the program will increase their swimming skills and families will be engaged with their children throughout the process. Black children are three times more likely to drown in the U.S. than their white peers.
After a one-year pilot, we intend to scale the program. The long-term goal is for our society to recognize that drowning is preventable.  Together we envision a national call to action in which ALL children, especially those of color, have the opportunity to learn to be safe around water, swim and have fun.
